The Slovak Mining Museum was founded on 1. July 1900. It is a specialised organisation that purposefully collects, scientifically and professionally processes, uses and makes available material documents in relation to comprehensive documentation of the development of mining, related mining disciplines, geology, mineral conservation, the development of mining towns and areas in Slovakia, especially Banská Štiavnica as a World Heritage Site and the Štiavnica Mountains (Štiavnické vrchy) Protected Landscape Area. It is the only museum of its kind in Slovakia.
