SNM – The Museum of Hungarian Culture in Slovakia – Imre Madách’s Mansion
The rococo-classical manor house in Dolná Strehová, surrounded by a large English park, was built in the 18th century by the Hungarian yeomanry Madách family. At present, the manor house is part of the Museum of Hungarian Culture in Slovakia. The local exhibitions are dedicated to the life and work of the important Hungarian writer and playwright, Imre Madách. The most famous work of this native of Strehová, the verse drama The Tragedy of Man, belongs to the golden fund of world literature and is often compared to works such as Goethe’s Faust or Milton’s Paradise Lost. However, the village of Dolná Strehová is also connected with Hungarian literature and culture through other personalities. For all of them we can mention the famous Hungarian polymath of Slovak origin, Matthias Bel, who studied at the local Latin school.
