The Romanesque-Gothic church in Veľká Čalomija, whose origins date back to the 12th century, served the faithful until 1868. It was damaged during the Mongol invasion in 1241-42. It was probably rebuilt in the second half of the 13th century in the late Romanesque style, with the original nave extended to the south and the entrance created in the new wall. At the end of the 14th century, the building was rebuilt in the Gothic style, the church was extended to the west. In the late Gothic period, a quadrangular sacristy was added and a crypt was built under the Romanesque nave. In the Baroque period, a brick vestibule was added in front of the southern entrance to the older nave.
The grounds of the church are in good condition after a recent extensive restoration. The site is marked with information boards and a well-maintained road leads to it.
